Our Souhrada family was blessed with a beautiful summer
evening as we gathered Saturday at the home of Mark & Marlene Slettehaugh
and Darryl Daws for dinner that they prepared. After we were seated two young
members of our family, Rachel Rhodes and Colton Daws, served our meal. The
Campbell Family hosted our Sunday morning Kolache Breakfast and following
this we watched a slide show of pictures of our past 30 reunions assembled by
Peter Souhrada. A Souhrada Family History area was set up by Anton Vanicek to
help us get better acquainted with our Souhrada Family history. He encouraged
us to bring our own family records up to date.
Before lunch Leota Campbell Anderson told the story of how one spoken
sentence started our Souhrada Family Reunions. "Tell Leota I want to
meet her before she goes home." Dalyn Souhrada spoke these words
31 years ago to his sister, Donna Urman at Anna Souhrada Rassman’s funeral.
The following day 5 of 17 Souhrada cousins, Bill Rassman, Marlys Gronwoldt,
Dalyn, Donna, Leota and their spouses met at Dalyn’s farm home. They enjoyed
their time together and sent invitations to all 17 of their Souhrada cousins
to attend a Cousin get-together the following month. Within a few years the
invitations list grew to over 200.
Then in September 2000 Frank and Linda Souhrada searched our homeland and
found Frank’s 3rd cousin Jiri Souhrada and his wife Vera. These past many
years Jiri and Vera have held many World Wide Souhrada Family Reunions in the
Czech Republic.
Lunch was ready to be served and Leota thanked God for the food that we were
about to enjoy. Our noon meal that consisted of a great variety of delicious
Czech dishes was prepared and beautifully served by a caterer hired by Loren
and Arlene Leslie. This same caterer also baked our delicious breakfast
koloches.
Dave Souhrada conducted our family auction this year with the wonderful help
of younger members of our family - Rachel Rhodes, Savannah Callaway, and
Calvin and Mary Kotrba. At our business meeting Peter Souhrada expressed his
gratitude for Leota Campbell Anderson’s information and photos she sent him
from our past reunions to be included on the website. The 2012 Souhrada
Reunion was discussed and will tentatively be held at Dalyn and Phyllis’ farm
home, Lime Springs Iowa. This is the original farmstead of Dalyn’s grandparents,
Vaclav and
Katherine Souhrada who immigrated to the USA in the 1870’s.
In Memory of: Three members of our Souhrada Family, Hope Souhrada,
Viola Leslie, and Frank Souhrada III passed away this past year and all will
be greatly missed. Hope Souhrada went home to be with our Lord Jesus this
past year just a few days before Christmas. She and her late husband Johnny
were the parents of Janel Souhrada Stephens and Dave. Both Hope & Johnny
were very active in our reunions, attending almost all until the past few
years. They not only hosted our 4th Reunion but also co-hosted many others.
Viola Leslie attended the very 1st Souhrada Cousins Get-together. The only
reunions she missed were those few that were too great a distance for her to
travel. She was the wife of Carl Leslie, and mother of their 2 sons, Dr.
Loren & Richard. Viola’s life was one of love - love of God, love of
family and love of teaching. Frank
Souhrada III, brother of Peter Souhrada, was the one who was able to
locate Jiri and Vera Souhrada during his early travels to Pisek, Czech
Republic. He and his wife Linda attended many of our family reunions and will
be sorely missed.
