Mayor of Pisek CZ recognizes Souhrada family donations for Ukrainian refugees

It all began with a call from Linda Souhrada to Jiri Souhrada in Pisek

When Linda Souhrada called Jiri and asked how things were going in Pisek, she was informed of the large number of Ukrainian refugees arriving in Pisek and neighboring cities that were beginning to strain the regions social services. Linda asked, “What can we do to help?” and Jiri indicated that Pisek could really use any financial help and so began Linda’s request for contributions. After a successful campaign, Janel Stephens, and her granddaughter Mary Kotrba of Tipton Iowa, were in the Czech Republic and were recognized by Věra Szkanderová, the mayor of Pisek. At a brief ceremony, Mayor Szkanderová expressed the city’s appreciation for the Souhrada family’s generous contribution. She indicated the funds will be used to teach Czech language skills to the refugee children.

The Mayor of Písek in the Czech Republic appreciated the donations of the Souhrada family for Ukrainian refugees.

Here is the letter of appreciation sent by Mayor Vanžurová:

“Dear Mrs. Linda Souhrada, (and as implied, to Jiri and all Souhrada family members)

let me thank you wholeheartedly for the financial gift you gave to the Ukrainian refugees. It is unbelievable that the refugee crisis is resonating in the United States among our compatriots, who are not indifferent to how our city copes with the influx of refugees. Many thanks to all donors!

I really appreciate your help and I can assure you that the money will be used meaningfully. We anticipate that we would also pay for the teaching of Czech, as knowledge of the language is essential for their successful integration.

There are currently almost 900 refugees from Ukraine in the town of Písek, many of them came here to visit their relatives who had already worked in our town or in the vicinity before the conflict, others were brought here by our citizens, others came alone. The city is trying to do the maximum for them. We help them to ensure decent housing, we have set up adaptation groups for children before they start school, where they also learned Czech. In cooperation with other organizations, we help refugees find work.

In our district, after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, a great wave of solidarity arose. In addition to sending aid directly to Ukraine, our citizens and entrepreneurs also helped refugees who found asylum in the town of Písek. They carried the material and food aid that people, who often came to us with only a few things, needed it. Many provided them with a roof over their heads.

Once again, people have proven to be good, and when someone gets in trouble, they help. In these difficult times, knowledge is a great boost and encouragement.

The city respects all those who have helped in any way and still help. Therefore, accept my thanks again for your gift.

Mgr. Eva Vanžurová, mayor of Písek.”
