1981 – The First Souhrada Family Reunion

Sunday, June 28, 1981 was a beautiful sunny Minnesota summer day when eight of seventeen first Souhrada cousins, grandchildren of Vaclav and Kathryn Souhrada, gathered at the home of George and Leota Campbell in Bloomington, MN to either get acquainted or come to know one another better.

Dalyn and Phyllis Souhrada and their three sons, Aaron, Eric & Todd, daughter Rachel from Lime Springs, Iowa were first to arrive. They were followed by Delbert & Anna Merrill of Spring Valley, Minnesota and Viola Leslie of Chester, Iowa.

Marvin & Marlys Gronwoldt from Riceville, Iowa brought Libbie Prochaska of Riceville, Iowa. Libbie was the youngest of Vaclav & Kathryn children and an aunt to the Souhrada cousins.

Harry & Viola Noska and their daughter Renee from Park Rapids, Minnesota were next to join us.  A few minutes later coming from Long Prairie, Minnesota were John & Donna Urman and their sons Mark & Paul and their daughter and son-in-law Cindy & Keith Dun of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Traveling the greatest distance to attend were Lester and LaVonne Noska from Springfield, Illinois. Last to arrive was Jane Souhrada of Minneapolis, MN, daughter of Emil and Ardis Souhrada. She told us her parents were attending a family reunion on her Mother’s side of the family but that she would very much like take their place and meet and be with her father’s cousins. The group more than welcomed her.

The food everyone brought was delicious, but the excitement of our Souhrada Family gathering together overruled all. The decision was made that day to have another Souhrada Family Reunion the following year. Dalyn and Phyllis Souhrada volunteered to host our second reunion at their farm home in rural Lime Springs, Iowa where the parents of all the Souhrada cousins were born and raised.
